It is true that an attached garage offers the homeowner the ability to get from the house to the car (and vice versa) without having to brave the elements. But what many homeowners don’t give consideration to is that detached garages offer so much more in terms of versatility and design. If an attached garage is a deal breaker for a house you are buying or even the new house you are building, you may want to think again.
Many folks actually dislike the attached garage’s aesthetic. If you own an older home, and are considering adding an attached garage it may take away from the integrity of the house. If you were to add a detached garage you would have the capacity to set it back from the house or angle it off on its own.
If you live in a seasonable climate, you could make a beautiful, floral garden path where each time you walk into your house or leave it, it creates a small path of beauty that then sets off a relaxed state of mind.
If the garage is already attached to the home but is rundown and dilapidated, instead of rebuilding, use the space for a something that will add meaning to your life. You could create a patio with a fire pit to be enjoyed by friends. You could make a beautiful flower or vegetable garden. Add a beautiful wrought iron table, some trellises and you will have a quiet place to enjoy coffee and brunch outside.
If you need extra living space a room above detached garages are a great and super low cost option. You could create an in-law apartment that would give your guests the privacy they would prefer. By adding plumbing and electricity you could make it a small apartment that you could rent out. If you went a little bigger, your detached garage could offer extra workspace and these make great storage buildings.
