Olympia Steel Buildings Cool Metal Roofing Is Energy Efficient and Sustainable

Cool Metal Roofing for pre-engineered steel buildings and metal building systems is a family of sustainable, energy efficient roofing products comprised of unpainted and pre-painted metal finishes. Cool metal roofing is available in a wide variety of finishes, colors, textures and profiles for both steep-slope and low-slope roofing applications.

The roof can have the greatest impact on the energy use of any building, including pre-engineered steel buildings and metal building systems.

Generally, metal roofing's "coolness" is determined by its reflectivity and emissivity. As the diagram demonstrates, when solar radiation strikes a roof surface, some of that radiation - up to 70 percent in the case of a "cool metal roof" - is reflected off the roof's surface, less heat is tranferred into the building and the building remains cooler. Therefore, a roof surface with high reflectivity as well as high emittance value, such as a "cool metal roof" will remain cooler and less heat will be transferred into the building or into ambient air than with a roof surface having low reflectivity, such as a typical asphalt shingle roof system.

Mill-finish metal roof systems for steel buildings have very high solar reflectance but limited emittance. Metal roofs with oven-cured, pre-painted organic coatings that incorporate new "cool pigment" technology offer high total solar reflectance and high infrared emittance even with dark colors. Emissivity as high as 90% can be achieved for painted metal roofs.

What are Olympia buildings made of?

Olympia Steel buildings are made of 100% U.S. commercial grade steel.

How secure is the framing?
Steel buildings are fastened together with bolts and screws. The connections remain secure because there is little movement in the frame. Nailed together connections used in traditional wooden post and beam construction become loose due to shrinkage and warping of the wooden frame. Steel buildings do not warp, shrink, or change with time so the connections remain secure. Since steel framing cannot burn like wood framing can, you may also benefit from lower costs for insurance.

What will it cost to ship the building to me?
Freight costs vary with the weight of the steel building and the destination location. To save our customers money on shipping expenses we use share-loading to ship as many steel buildings and metal buildings systems as possible in one full semi truck load.

Are the buildings painted?
Yes, the walls and trim are painted with a long-lasting factory-applied metal building paint manufactured by AkzoNobel, the leading manufacturer of heavy duty, high performance protective coatings for steel. Olympia's durable paint coatings come in 12 environmentally friendly colors and have a 40-year warranty against chipping, cracking, peeling and blistering, and a 30 year warranty against chalking. These special high-tech paint coatings are classified as "cool paints" because they reflect up to 70% of the sun's rays, resulting in a cooler building and decreased energy costs.

Can I choose a paint color for my building?
Yes. You can choose from twleve wall colors and trim colors and nine standing seam roof colors, backed by a 40 year warranty.

Are the buildings insulated?
We offer many types of insulation with a range of R-values up to R-40 for you to choose from. Our technicians can help you determine what insulation type will best suit your steel building needs.

Can I put doors and windows on my steel building?
Yes. Our steel buildings can be customized to incorporate doors, windows, ceiling lights, and more. Your sales representative will gladly help you design and customize the right building for you.

How long does it take to get my building delivered to me?
Because we design every metal building and steel building system individually for each customer, delivery time varies from project to project. Your building consultant can give you a better idea of your delivery time after understanding your requirements.

Will my building meet local building codes and wind and snow load requirements?
Every Olympia building is engineered to comply with regional building codes, wind load (hurricane), snow load and seismic (earthquake) requirements. We will design your building to meet the requirements of your local building codes and provide permit drawings stamped and certified by one of our registered engineers. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the customer to verify all building codes with their local building or zoning department

Olympia Steel Buildings self-storage, mini-storage and mini-warehouse buildings are quick and easy to erect. Precision fabrication and concise assembly drawings allow Olympia self-storage steel buildings to be erected quickly, minimizing labor costs, and units can be easily expanded to accommodate future growth.

After the foundation for the building has been poured and the framing materials laid out for the entire building in the location where they will be erected, the hardware is attached to the metal framing and the framing is connected. The steel sheeting for the interior walls is attached to the metal framing and each sidewall panel is raised into place and connected to the
previous wall panel with the overhead girts.

Purlins connect the framing of the sidewalls and overhead girts connect the sidewalls to the interior walls. Leveling of steel building components should occur throughout this process to insure that the building remains square. Temporary bracing is attached for stability during steel building erection and later removed once all of the framing is secured in place.

All framing is secured to the buildings foundation and additional framing is added to secure door openings. Steel sheeting is first fastened to the end walls, then installed between the doors. An “L” shaped trim piece is installed over door openings and a foam closure is fitted on the trim piece.

Roof construction begins with a closure piece placed at the edge of the steel building above the door
openings on the metal framing. This closure piece is covered with a mastic adhesive strip. A moisture barrier is rolled into place with a mastic strip on the ridge of the previous piece of steel sheeting enabling a watertight seal when the roof sheeting is screwed down with the fasteners. This procedure is repeated for the length of the roof. Finally, the remaining roof trim is attached and the doors
are installed.
